Questions to ask about VA help at home

Veterans and families often hear that the VA can help with care at home, then struggle to understand what is actually approved. Begin with the Veteran's VA care team or social worker. Ask about assessed needs, eligibility, local availability, and the exact authorization before making financial or scheduling commitments.

Understand the program being discussed

VA's Homemaker and Home Health Aide program can support eligible Veterans with daily activities at home. Enrollment alone does not establish entitlement to a particular schedule: community-care eligibility, clinical criteria, and local availability also matter. A copay may apply.

The VA describes aides working through organizations contracted with VA. Ask the social worker to explain which service is being considered and how a participating provider is selected. This resource does not confirm any agency's current VA participation.

Prepare a clear account of the need

Before the conversation, make a short list of the tasks that are difficult, the help family members currently provide, and the times nobody is available. Include the home ZIP and preferred schedule. Use everyday examples so the care team can understand what happens between appointments.

  • What assessment or referral is needed next?
  • Which services and hours are authorized, for which dates?
  • Who can confirm the provider and first visit?
  • Are there costs the Veteran must pay?
  • How are changed needs, renewals, or unused hours handled?

Keep authorization and booking together

Ask for a clear record of the authorized arrangement and the person to contact about questions. Confirm the provider's acceptance and the actual start date. Do not assume a private booking will later be reimbursed or that one VA benefit authorizes another.

Keep identifying and health information within the VA's or selected provider's approved channels. A first enquiry can describe the broad need without attaching military records or medical paperwork.

Questions families ask

Does living near Hill Air Force Base establish eligibility?

No. Eligibility depends on the relevant VA program and the Veteran's circumstances, not the home's proximity to a base.

Can Alderwick approve a benefit or authorize hours?

No. This page helps you prepare questions. Ask the VA care team or social worker to confirm eligibility, assessment, authorization, and any cost.
