Check what must happen before benefits start
The NAIC's consumer guide explains that policies have benefit triggers and may have an elimination period before payments begin. How that waiting period is counted can differ: calendar days and paid service days are not interchangeable. Ask which rule your policy uses.
Home-care coverage, eligible provider requirements, benefit limits, and exclusions depend on the contract. Have the insurer point you to the relevant sections rather than relying on a general description of long-term care insurance.
Use a short call worksheet
Have the policy number available for the insurer, then record the representative's name, date, reference number, and answers. Request the current claims forms and a written checklist. Ask who should submit each document and how you can check that it was received.
- Does this policy cover care in the person's home?
- What assessment and documentation establish eligibility?
- Does the proposed provider meet the policy's requirements?
- How do limits and the elimination period apply to this schedule?
- Which invoices, care records, or clinician forms are required?
- Who receives payment, and what might the family pay first?
Compare the care plan with the written answer
Give the selected provider the insurer's documentation requirements through an appropriate channel. Ask whether it can supply the records requested. Keep a separate budget for amounts the insurer has not confirmed.
Track submissions and follow up on missing items. An agency's offer to help with paperwork does not itself establish coverage, approval, or payment. Keep the insurer's decision and the provider's service agreement together.
Questions families ask
Will all long-term care policies pay the same amount?
No. Ask your insurer to explain your own policy's covered services, benefit limits, eligibility requirements, and waiting period.
Should I upload the policy in a general website enquiry?
Use the insurer's or selected provider's approved secure process for policy documents. An initial enquiry only needs broad planning information.
