Nighttime needs can be very different from daytime needs. Before choosing overnight support, families should document what actually happens after bedtime, how often it happens, what level of supervision is needed, and whether a medical or sleep-related issue needs clinical attention.
Frequent nighttime waking is exhausting a spouse or family caregiver
Falls or unsafe wandering are a concern
Toileting or mobility support is needed overnight
The family needs a more reliable overnight coverage plan
Questions to answer before choosing a plan
- Is the need active help, standby supervision, or simple presence?
- How often does the person wake or need assistance?
- Are sudden changes being evaluated medically?
- Would overnight help solve the real problem, or is broader 24-hour planning needed?
Nighttime behavioral, sleep or medical problems may require clinical assessment. Non-medical support should not be presented as treatment.
